Never underestimate how wonderful it can be to make someone else smile. Whether it’s a friend, a family member, or a complete stranger, you have the power to improve someone’s day. Just think about the last time a waiter made you laugh, a friend gave you a compliment, or a random stranger smiled at you. Plus, when you spread good vibes to the people around you, you’re bound to feel happier as well. If you aren’t sure how to brighten someone’s day – or you doubt you even have the ability – check out the ideas below.

How to Brighten Someone’s Day

  • Smile and say “good morning.”
  • Give a genuine compliment.
  • Help a friend or loved one in whatever way they need (babysitting, running errands, etc.)
  • Buy a coffee (or soda, ice cream, etc.) for the person in line behind you.
  • Give a hard-working waiter/waitress a big tip.
  • Make (or buy) a meal for a friend who’s feeling stressed or depressed.
  • Volunteer with a local charity or school.
  • Buy a hot meal for a homeless person.
  • Ask someone about their day and truly listen to their response.
  • Reconnect with an old friend by phone or email.
  • Make a snack or dessert to share with your friends.
  • Leave a handwritten note in a book at the library, extending good wishes to the next reader.
  • Introduce yourself to a new resident at your senior living community and invite him or her to sit with you.
  • Put money in a stranger’s parking meter.
  • Leave a random uplifting note on someone’s windshield.
  • Keep a friend company while they run errands.
  • Send a thoughtful letter to thank someone for the difference they made in your life (a teacher, a nurse, etc.)
  • Donate blood.
  • When talking with a friend, focus on speaking less and listening more.
  • Hold the door open for someone.
  • Let someone with fewer groceries go ahead of you in line.
  • Leave behind change at a vending machine for the next person to use.
  • Offer to grab a friend a cup of coffee or tea.
  • If someone in front of you in line is short of change, help them if you can.
  • Send a friend a random gift to let them know you’re thinking of them.
  • Let someone go in front of you in traffic.
  • Hold the elevator for someone.
  • Let your partner or friend choose what to watch on TV.
  • Treat a friend to lunch.
  • When someone posts on social media, write a friendly comment.
  • Send a thank you note to anyone you feel deserves one.
  • Bring soup to a friend who’s sick.
  • Tell someone a funny story.
  • Ask for someone’s opinion on something and tell them how much you value their ideas.
  • Truly show your gratitude when someone does something nice for you.
  • Leave a thank you note for the cleaning staff.
  • Wave to a child in the car next to you or make a funny face.
  • Pick up litter.

Keep in mind that some of these ideas are more appropriate for a friend or loved one, while others can be used with acquaintances or strangers. In addition, remember that the person may not respond in kind or express gratitude. And that’s okay! You tried to boost someone else’s mood, and that’s what counts.
