Instant Mood Boosters

Take a Walk

One of the quickest ways to release some mood-boosting endorphins is to simply take a walk. Walking has been proven to improve mental health, including reducing your stress levels and your risk of depression – and these are just a few of the many benefits of walking. Plus, walking pairs well with one of our other instant mood boosters . . .

Go Outside

According to TIME Magazine, “Spending time outdoors, especially in green spaces, is one of the fastest ways to improve your health and happiness.” So, if you’re feeling a little blue and the weather is cooperating, head outdoors! You could take a walk, enjoy your favorite beverage, talk with a friend, or simply appreciate the sounds and beauty of nature.

Spend Time with a Loved One

Humans are social creatures, so if you’re feeling glum, talk to a friend or family member or join a group activity. Spending time with other people can help you shift your focus away from any self-defeating thoughts you’ve been having. This can be especially beneficial if the other person (or people) is able to help you crack a smile or even bust out laughing.

Write a Letter to a Friend

When’s the last time you wrote an old-fashioned letter to someone you care about? Although letter writing isn’t as common as it once was, it’s still a great way to connect with loved ones and brighten someone’s day. If you take a moment to think, you can likely think of someone in your life who would love to receive a letter from you, whether that’s your sweet sister, your best friend, or your old work buddy. To get started, check out our blog post How to Write a Letter to a Friend.

Reminisce

You’ve lived a rich life, full of fun memories, lovely people, and exciting events. So, when you’re feeling down, take a moment to draw from your own experiences. What was the happiest moment of your childhood? How did your most cherished pet bring you joy? When have you laughed so hard you cried? If you’re having trouble getting started, head over to our blog post Fun Ways to Reminisce

Time for the bonus round! If you’ve already tried the ideas above and your mood is still middling, try some of these instant mood boosters:

  • Perform an act of kindness
  • Exercise
  • Enjoy your favorite hobby
  • Meditate
  • Volunteer
  • Fix something that’s broken
  • Complete something on your to-do list
  • Take a relaxing bath
  • Dance to your favorite song
  • Change into cozy, comfy clothes
  • Watch your favorite comedy
  • Purchase a bouquet of flowers
  • Bake or cook something
  • Donate to a good cause
  • Journal about good memories

It’s important to remember that sometimes the things we most crave when we’re feeling down are actually counter-productive. For example, if you’re thinking about hiding away in your room and watching TV, consider going against your instincts. Instead, try taking a walk while talking to a friend on the phone. With the right attitude, you’re bound to feel cheerful again soon.

Good luck!
