Some people think that old-fashioned letter writing is too much of a hassle. But that’s why letter writing is great! It shows how much you care. Let’s talk about how to write a letter to a friend that they’ll never forget.

How to Write a Letter to a Friend

Were you under the impression that nobody mails letters anymore? In fact, the US Postal Service processes over 471 million pieces of mail every day. While email may be faster, a mailed letter shows someone that you’ll put real effort into making them smile. It also offers lots of opportunities for creativity.

Focus on Fun

Your loved ones will appreciate an update, but why not share a bit more? A handwritten letter can be fun, it can be touching, and it can be a reminder of why someone is so important to you. Here are prompts to help you think about how to write a letter to a friend:

Memories

Everybody loves to reminisce. Why not remind your loved one of a great time you shared together? Think about your favorite memory with that person. Where did you go? What did you do? Ask them what they remember about it, or what their favorite memory is of you. You might be surprised what you learn!

Gratitude

Sending a thank-you note in return for a gift is polite. But what if you sent someone a thank-you note just for being them? Tell someone about the parts of your relationship that you’re grateful for. They will undoubtedly adore it.

Five Things I Like About You

People love to be noticed and appreciated. So why not tell someone exactly why you appreciate them? Are they a good listener? Do they have a flair for fashion, or skill in the kitchen? Share five ways they make your life better. The best part is that they’ll probably send five nice things right back to you!

Question Corner

When you send someone a letter, it’s nice to get a reply. Sometimes, people struggle to reply because they aren’t sure what to say. Why not avoid that by offering some questions for them to answer? You can come up with questions yourself, or ask the internet for some prompts. Get creative with your questions, and your loved ones will get creative with their answers!

Dazzle with Design

Now that your letter is written, let’s get crafty! Personal touches like doodles, stickers, and little handwritten notes in the margins are always fun. You can really step it up with some of the options below:

Make Your Own Stationery

Wouldn’t it be cool if you had your own personalized stationery? Good news! With a few clicks of a button, you can use a stationery template in Microsoft Word, or even create your own from scratch. Or, if you don’t want to mess with a computer, you can create handmade stationary. You could purchase a letterhead stamp, get some colorful paper from a craft store, and make something truly unique to send to the people you love.

Try Some Origami

If you’re looking to elevate your mailable craft game, look no further than origami. Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into creative shapes. While some origami can get pretty elaborate, no need to fear. There are lots of simple origami shapes a beginner can master with just a little practice. If you have a friend that’s nuts about their pets, why not send a letter in the shape of their beloved Boston Terrier? Maybe the teacher in your life would get a kick out of an origami pencil. You can even save paper by folding your letter into its own envelope

Mail Something Extra

You don’t have to just send a letter!  Next time you’re reading a magazine or newspaper, get out some scissors. If you have a friend that loves to cook, clip a recipe or an article on food trends. If you know someone going through a tough time, why not cut out some comics and send them a laugh? Mail to younger ones can include sticker sheets or coloring pages.
